This is a nice excavated artillery cannon shell for the Parrott style rifled cannon. This is the larger size that went in the gun referred to by collectors as the 30 pounder Parrott. The bore of the gun would have been 4.2 inches in diameter. It is a U.S. 4.2-inch Parrot case shot shell. This one is case shot and is very heavy. It has the remnants of the zinc Parrott time fuse in the top of the shell. The shell body displays well from all angles as you can see. At the base of the shell it has the notches that would have held the sabot before it was fired out of the cannon. One this that is special about this shell is the marking on the side of the shell body. You can still read pa good bit of the "PATENTED 1861" stamp from the arsenal. It isn't very often that you can still read this mark after the years in the ground. This is a nice solid looking 30# Parrott case shot shell with the patent mark still visible.
