This is a VERY NICE US marked 1850's model Staff and field Officers Sword presentation sword. This sword is presented to Captain N Bags. It reads on the scabbard Presented to Capt. N Bags by the non commissioned Officers and privates of the Bat. D 2nd Art. Pa. This sword belonged to Captain Nicholas Baggs. that served in the Civil War as a Union Officer. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company D 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery (112th Pennsylvania Volunteers) on January 7, 1862. On September 10, 1862 he was promoted to Captain and commander of the unit, filling the vacancy caused when Captain David Sadler was promoted to Major. He led his companies through its successive battles, and was Wounded at the September 29, 1864 Battle of Chaffin's Farm, Petersburg, Virginia. While hospitalized from his wounds, his enlistment expired, and he was honorably discharged on January 9, 1865. He lived to be 92 years old.
