Authentic Civil War Infantry 2nd Lieutenant Single Breasted Frock Coat
Item #: CS460
This is an original Civil War officer's frock coat that displays well. The jacket is constructed of deep blue, almost black wool material that retains all of its nine Scovill Button Company made staff officer style eagle buttons on the front and three at the cuff. These buttons were manufactured by the famous Scovill Manufacturing Company that was located in Waterbury, Connecticut. The coat is constructed with distinctively tailored sleeves with the 7 1/2 inch elbows and then narrowing dramatically at the cuffs and tufted shoulders. On the reverse of the coat, the tail buttons are missing in auction but it has the tail pockets inside. On the shoulder are stitched a pair of Infantry 2nd Lieutenant's shoulder straps with blue velvet centers now faded to greenish color. This is a very well-crafted coat. The top has the original collar that measures one inch tall. When the coat is opened, the crafting of the inner lining shows that this garment was finely tailored not just quickly assembled. The interior has the typical quilted green polished cotton body lining. The sleeves of the coat are correct and date it to Civil War era. The red and white sleeve lining is present with a name "Kahn" amd some initials "JK" written in old ink. This is an attractive coat that was actually used and is not just a surplus piece.
